How many times have you heard, America has the best health care system in the world? This may be partially true however, Americans are paying the most for health care in the world. Actually, many wonder whether we d be better off adopting a universal health care system. The Unites States is the only industrialized nation that does not provide universal health care for its citizens. Many feel the health care system either costs too much, covers too little and virtually makes it impossible to obtain. Somewhere down the road many Americans have seemed to inherit a unique ideology, that health care must be â€Å"earned,† no matter how much or how little control a person has over their health status? There is a dark stigma among some that truly†¦show more content†¦When one hears the term healthcare it can evoke personal experiences in one’s mind, good and bad. When it comes to obtaining health insurance the system is complex, difficult to navigate and there is no guarantee of approval due to pre-existing conditions or not meeting some specific criteria. To simplify the health care process, there are two basic categories: privately owned insurance companies (i.e Humana, Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, etc) and government-funded insurance (i.e Medicaid, Medicare). Most working Americans get health insurance through their employers or organization called group insurance. However, some employers and organizations do not offer group insurance so an alternative would be to directly purchase their own individual health insurance. A universal health care system would give everyone the same access to the same quality of care. America has some of the best researchers, doctors, and treatment options in the world yet, we spend more money on medical care than any other country, â€Å"45 million† (Rashford, 2007) Americans still live without health insurance every day. â€Å"Medical problems contribute to 54.5 percent of personal bankruptcies and threaten the solvency of solidly middle-class Americans† (Dranove Millenson, 2006). Sir Gawain and The Green Knight Imagery Essay In literature, insights into characters, places, and events are often communicated to the reader through the use of imagery within the text. Thus is the case with Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. The Pearl Poets use of imagery runs rampant within the work culminating to set forth the theme of mysticism and/or the supernatural. In this Medieval romance, the types of imagery used are that of the season or climate, the colors and textures of fabrics and jewelry, and that of the introduction of the Green Knight himself. The seasons play a major role in the development of the plot, allowing action to skip several months at a time by simply mentioning the turning of the leaves. The thematic imagery starts to outline the theme of the supernatural, when dealing with meteorological changes. For example when Gawain is searching for the Green Knights Chapel, it is mid-winter. Christmas is approaching, yet what answers his prayers comes in the form of something nearly unimaginable. We are made aware of the importance of the castle first when it just suddenly appears from nowhere and secondly when we notice it is set in a green field. The green field makes no sense to the reader because it is the middle of winter, but it does signify the fact that the appearance of the castle is not accidental. It is the combination of Sir Gawains prayer, the appearance of a beautiful summer landscape and the castle in the middle of it that strikes the reader and asks the question: What does it mean? The castle is great with a palisade of palings planted about for about two miles. It is shining in the sun, and Sir Gawain is standing in awe looking at it. He is thankful to Jesus and Saint Julian that they have put this castle there for him. (Mossakowski 1) This appearance in out of the middle of nowhere definitely carries with it some mystical, magical weight. The fog near the Green Knights demolished chapel can also be described as a change in atmosphere which leads to some mystical or magical emotions. The attires of the characters do not match up to these atmospheric conditions when it comes down the supernatural. If anything they can be said to have an unrealistic or inflated view of medieval life. The narrative opens with a holiday feast in King Arthurs court. The richness of this setting is represented by the decorations surrounding Queen Guenevere described in lines 76-80. With costly silk curtains, a canopy over, / Of Toulouse and Turkestan tapestries rich / All broidered and bordered with the best gems / Ever brought into Britain, with bright pennies / to pay. These lines also symbolize the queens role in the poem of a stately symbol of chivalric Camelot and as a female ideal. In this setting women are all around, but Guenevere is positioned above them and is surrounded by expensive, beautiful things. She is clearly made superior. Gawain, Arthurs knight who takes the Green Knights challenge, is portrayed in different lights as the story progresses. Descriptions of fabric and clothing are integral to this portrayal. When he is departing Camelot to find the Green Knight, Gawain is depicted as a virtuous, chivalrous knight bravely facing his fate. His clothing, therefore, is red, symbolizing courage, and bears a gold pentangle, a symbol of virtue. This is described in lines 636-639, On shield and coat in view / He bore that emblem bright / As to his word most true / And in speech most courteous knight. Society is pressuring people so much to succeed in life and to become someone they can not be, that people act in any way they can to reach this goal. Often, they use power and domination to show that they are important and can influence the world. Hills Like White Elephants reflects the power of men over women. The plot, characterization and semic codes prove this claim. First of all, the plot of the story ? shows that the man has more control and authority than the woman. Since he is the protagonist, he takes more space in the story. He has more influence because he is the main character and because the story is based on what he wants. His goal is to convince Jig to get aborted; so once again, he is more important since he wants something in particular. On the contrary, Jig is the antagonist because she is opposed to the idea of getting an abortion. She wants to keep her child, but her husband is insisting so much that she can not transmit her opinion and express how she feels. The plot of Hills Like White Elephants clearly demonstrates the power of men over women. Secondly, the man has more power than his wife because the characterization proves it very well. The woman is very weak and consults her husband before doing anything, as if she could not make a decision by herself. 'What should we drink?' 'Should we have another drink? She is unable to use her judgment and has to have her husband's approval before doing anything. Also, even though she would like to keep the child, she puts his feelings before hers and would do almost anything to make him happy. 'And you think then we'll be all right and be happy' 'And you really want to?' 'And if I do it you'll be happy and things will be like they were and you'll love me?' She is willing to sacrifice what she desires the most to please her husband. This is a very big sign of inferiority and being manipulated by her husband. She cares more about his happiness than hers. Finally, the girl has no confidence in herself and does not consider herself as someone important: 'I don't care about me'. On the contrary, the man is very forceful and dominant. He is always repeating that everything will be fine but deep inside, he only wants to get rid of the baby. 'But I don't want anybody but you. I don't want any one else' 'I don't care anything about it.' He insists that she must do the operation and is putting a lot of pressure on her. 'It's really an awfully simple operation' 'You don't have to be afraid, I know lots of people that have done it' 'I won't worry about that because it's perfectly simple.' He is so persistent and almost commands her to get aborted that she feels she has no choice but to accept. He is also playing with her feelings by saying that things will be great. He tells her he will love her and everything will be like they used to. Of course, she is very tempted but still confused because she really wants this baby. He is very manipulative and almost compels her to do it. His strategy is to repeat the same words over and over again to convince her: ' Well, if you don't want to you don't have to. I wouldn't have you do it if you didn't want to. But I know it's perfectly simple' The girl is so fed up of hearing his persistent comments that she says: 'Would you please please please...stop talking'. She feels overwhelmed and powerless about the situation. The characterization shows that men have more power than women. The Ending of Toni Morrison's Beloved essays While the actual value of Toni Morrison's novel, Beloved, is debatable, there is no question that the ending that Morrison provides for her work is an acceptable one. Beloved details Morrison's characters' descent into fantasy, and as is often the case in novels, the ending ties up many of the loose ends, and pulls the characters back into reality, with the events of the novel seeming simply, "...like an unpleasant dream during a troubling sleep"(324). On the other hand, while perhaps fitting and logical, Morrison's ending is not perfect. Morrison's style and storyline up until the ending is far from concrete, dealing with that which is implied, illusory, and symbolized, rather than what is plainly in view; she writes with suggestion rather than description. This pattern, however, is broken in the final chapter of Beloved. The narrator now, in the final chapter, takes a mainly external and therefore unemotional position, unlike earlier in Morrison's work where the emotions, personalities, and often fractured thoughts of the characters would be included in the narration. Apparently outside the story, in the final chapter, the narrator blandly reports that "...they [had] forgotten her like a bad dream...quickly and deliberately."(323). In comparison to the suggestions of events previously occurring in the novel, such as when Sethe flees with her children, and "...[she] collected every bit of life she had made, all the parts of her that were precious and fine and beautiful, and carried, pushed, dragged them through the veil."(233), the tired, run-of-the-mill account on page three hundred and twenty-three seems almost as if it had been written by an entirely different author.
